Plan
The very first step of getting your competition going, is to figure out the key pieces of when the competition is going to happen, how you are going to get the word out, and identifying what the prizes will be.
- WHEN the competition will happen:
Is there an event that works well to partner with the competition? (homecoming, football game, holiday travel, etc.) - HOW you will get the word out to students:
What is the best way to inform students about the competition? (Email, text, posters, announcements, etc.) What would make you excited about a competition? - IDENTIFY the prizes (what they are and who will be providing them):
Do you think additional prizes are needed? If so, are there fun prizes you can think of that don’t involve a sponsor? (example: extra credit, wear athletic shorts to school day, allowed to use your phone at school for a day, etc.)If a sponsor is needed:
What business might be able to provide a free experience or free gift card for a winner (trampoline parks, bowling alleys, Chick-fil-A gift cards, etc.). Who are the local car insurance agents in town (Allstate, State Farm. etc.)?
In the Resource Bank you will find an example of an email/letter than can be used when asking a potential sponsor to fund the competition!
Invite
We provide you with templated materials that you can easily adapt to work for your competition! Remember, people usually need to see and hear things multiple times before they truly do something about it, so the more methods they hear about the competition, the better. All of the templates can all be found in the Resource Bank.
Compete
Typically competitions will last 1-3 months. Throughout the span of the competition, keep people involved by:
- Checking the leaderboard to see how you are doing compared to your friends.
- If you have prizes that you are awarding throughout the competition, send out an email or newsletter announcing that winner to your audience so that they are encouraged to join if they have not already.
- Making an announcement at a pep rally.
- Making a fun video sharing about the competition.
- Posting on your social media and using the hashtag #SAFE2SAVE
Also, something helpful to know is that participants can still redeem points for free food and discounts at our partnered businesses without it affecting their competition points!
Celebrate
Take the time to celebrate at the end of the competition! Making a point to reflect on how many minutes were spent driving undistracted throughout the competition.
Ideas for Awarding Prizes:
- Presentation of awards and winners.
- Announce at a pep rally or assembly.
- Send an email or newsletter announcement to your school.
- Announce at a football or sports game.
- Announce through a social media video
