SAFE 2 SAVE and The Woodlands Financial Group announced today the kick off of the Houston-wide safe driving competition to promote undistracted driving. Houstonians can compete for the chance to win prizes totaling $9,000.

To combat distracted driving, the Texas Department of Public Safety along with local law enforcement is making consumers aware of a free app, SAFE 2 SAVE. It allows users to earn points for safe driving, and also has a pop-up notification reminding users who are texting, emailing or using social media while the car is in motion to put the phone down.

Doctors at Memorial Hermann urge drivers in and around Houston, named the country’s worst city for distracted driving by one study, to put down their phones.

“But the majority of people think they are the exception so they play the games of ‘I drive better than everyone else’ and ‘I’ve been driving for a long time.’ One gentleman even told me: ‘I’ve been driving since before seatbelts were a thing and I can handle my phone in the car!’”
