To combat distracted driving, the Texas Department of Public Safety along with local law enforcement is making consumers aware of a free app, SAFE 2 SAVE. It allows users to earn points for safe driving, and also has a pop-up notification reminding users who are texting, emailing or using social media while the car is in motion to put the phone down.

Doctors at Memorial Hermann urge drivers in and around Houston, named the country’s worst city for distracted driving by one study, to put down their phones.

“But the majority of people think they are the exception so they play the games of ‘I drive better than everyone else’ and ‘I’ve been driving for a long time.’ One gentleman even told me: ‘I’ve been driving since before seatbelts were a thing and I can handle my phone in the car!’”

Drivers across Houston now have the chance to earn free McDonald’s menu items just by keeping their eyes on the road.

On Monday, begins what AAA calls the one hundred deadliest days to be on the road.

That's the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day and according to the state department of public safety, Bexar County ranks number one to distracted driving deaths here in Texas.
